Our children’s future is in our hands. Our way of life is also under our control. The CarbonBuster initiative has been created to examine how we can deliver actions that will reduce our local footprint. A team of local residents has got together to look at – Food and Waste, Transport and Travel, Environment and Homes. Their brief is to create actions that we can take part in, and that are deliverable. The team will also to look at funding opportunities.

Reduce, reuse, refill repeat!
This #WorldRefillDay, choose to reuse and join millions of people around the world taking action to prevent plastic pollution.
As a global movement, we have the power to create a wave of change and show the rest of the world that the solutions to plastic pollution and the climate crisis are there – and together

Some key take away points are:
Contact your energy provider to see if you qualify for any insulation grants.
Traditional blanket insulation is cost effective and can be a DIY job if you are able
Think – spray foam insulation in a typical home loft (used only for storage) is not suitable as it can cause organic materials (wooden joists) to rot.
If you’ve had it fitted and your loft is only used for storage, contact Trading Standards
Don’t accept cold call offers for insulation, use recommendations from friends or local Check-a-Trade or Parish magazine

We may not be overly close to the sea in Nuthurst Parish, but we can all take actions at home to try and reduce our environmental impact on the oceans:
Reduce the amount of plastic you use or purchase – our oceans are becoming full of plastic which takes thousands of years to decompose. Ocean plastic can also result in fish consuming microplastics, which then we eat!
Go litter picking and don’t drop any litter yourself! Litter in our streets and beaches can find its way to the ocean, and cause huge environmental harm.
If you eat fish or other sea-life, try to only eat “responsibly sourced” products. This is advertised on the product label!
These are simple and cheap changes you can do this World Ocean Day – let us know in the comments what you are going to do
There are also slightly more costly changes you can make to help the oceans such as having a microplastic filter fitted to your washing machine. If this is not feasible for you, consider washing your clothes made of artificial fibres (ie plastics!) inside a pillow case. The pillow case will help to stop some of the microplastics leaching out into the water.

- One of our carbon busters has a very well established wilded section of their garden!
“We start off with primroses and then cowslips and have now migrated into grasses and daisies. There are also orchids which just appeared on their own. It usually gets cut about the middle of August.”

This year, it is taking place between the 16th – 22nd May. The Big Plastic Count wants you to count your plastic waste for this one week and submit your results online!
The results will show just how much household plastic we throw away, and how much is recycled, helping to encourage legislative and company changes on plastic packaging!

Have you heard of No Mow May? 🌻🌼🌸
Leave your mowers in the shed, do something else instead! By letting your lawn (or perhaps just a part of your garden!) grow wild for a month, you’ll allow plants to flower and provide a food and habitat source to pollinators 🐝 We know pollinators are on the decline, and we need to protect these vital species!
Plantlife are also encouraging No Mow May participants to join in their Every Flower Counts survey on the 21st May – count how many flowers are in a square metre patch of your lawn, and find out your own Personal Nectar Score! Find out more here: https://nomowmay.plantlife.org.uk/

- With the Easter holidays, often comes a lot more waste! One thing you can do is to check the packaging is recyclable before you buy any Easter products. Did you know you can recycle all of the packaging from most Easter Eggs?
💚 The cardboard and plastic shells can go in the mixed kerbside recycling
💚 Scrunch up your clean aluminium foil into a ball roughly the size of a tennis ball and place in your mixed kerbside recycling
✖️ Check if any foil is actually aluminium – if it springs back once you scrunch it, it is laminated, and must go in your general waste bin
💚 Put egg shells (not chocolate eggs!) in your home compost – if you don’t have one, WSCC and Get Composting are offering a reduced price on composters: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/land-waste-and-housing/waste-and-recycling/recycling-and-waste-prevention/reduce-your-waste/
Other things you can do to have an Easter celebration that is better for the planet, include:

- The children of St Andrews C of E School, Nuthurst, were asked to help design some carbon busting characters to help us promote our project and encourage everyone to try and do a little bit more to reduce our carbon footprint! Keep an eye out on our social media, website, and in the LINK magazine for their designs – thank you to those who took part!
- The school already does a lot to help reduce, reuse, recycle and repair, including: recycling old pens, crisp packets, paper and plastic; Chartwell (hot lunch supplier) food waste recycling scheme; fruit composters; pre-loved school uniforms; Christmas Jumper exchange and the clothing recycling bin in Mannings Heath. The school also has solar panels on their roof space; use the Nuthurst community allotment once a week and the staff are Forest Schools trained.
- The characters follow the colour scheme of green for nature, blue for health, and orange for waste.
- Taking small steps to reduce our carbon footprint can help make a big difference across our parish towards a greener future 💚
